St Helens Council’s Cabinet Member for Developing Young People has welcomed planning approval which will see works carried out at an outstanding Ofsted-rated primary school to accommodate four new classrooms.

At a recent planning meeting in St Helens Town Hall, permission was granted – subject to various conditions – to build an extension at Bleak Hill Primary School in Windle as part of the school’s ambition to become a three-form entry rather than a two and a half, meaning 90 permanent  pupil places can be can be accommodated for the 2020 intake.

As part of the works, funded by the Department of Education, a covered external teaching area, ancillary facilities, storage provision and additional playground provision will also be created – while a new drop off zone will be constructed to provide 15 spaces for parents to use as a drop off and collection point for pupils.

Councillor Sue Murphy, who is also deputy leader of St Helens Council said: “Bleak Hill Primary School is among the top performing education provisions in the borough, so I’m delighted to see this application granted which will allow more children to access quality education.

“It’s also pleasing to see that the development is being funded by the Department of Education at a time when investment in education is limited – so hopefully this is a sign of things to come, as every child deserves the best start in life.”

Ian Wellens, Headteacher of Bleak Hill Primary School, said: “We welcome the significant investment in Bleak Hill and look forward with positivity to the many opportunities this will create for pupils – present and future.”
