Following a request from the NHS, St Helens Council has programmed the bridge to shine pink on Monday 1 October, Saturday 20 October, Sunday 21 October, and Wednesday 31 October, to support breast cancer charities, Breast Cancer Now’s ‘Wear it Pink’ campaign – and Whiston & St Helens Hospitals’ month of fundraising to provide breast cancer patients with a free surgical bra and drain bag following surgery.
Breast cancer survivor, Julie Lynan, a Patient Advice & Liaison Officer for STHK said: “Following my wonderful treatment, I wanted to say a huge thank you for the care and support I received on my journey. I have been fundraising for a few years now trying to turn St Helens and Whiston hospitals pink each October and have raised around £20,000 so far.
“To have the Steve Prescott Bridge lit pink on several occasions throughout October is a great honour as it literally shines a light on the fantastic work that is being done in our hospitals to support breast cancer patients and their families.”
Councillor Gill Neal, St Helens Council’s portfolio holder for public Health, added: “As a council we’re proud to support important campaigns like this, and I salute our inspirational NHS staff who work tirelessly to care for breast cancer patients, while raising vital awareness and money to go towards research in the process.
“Statistics show that breast cancer survival rates are improving in the UK, having doubled in the last 40 years, so I would call on women to take the opportunity to check themselves out this Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The earlier conditions like this are caught, the better!”
