Article date – 21 August 2018

Elton Head Road will be closed from its junction with Sherdley Road to A570 Linkway from 28 August 2018 for the initial 22 weeks. A signed diversion route will be installed. Access for residents and businesses will be maintained at all times.

The works will involve a complete redesign of the roundabout, creating a traffic signal-controlled junction.

The St Helens Linkway came into operation in 1994 but in recent years has become a severely congested corridor, particularly at Elton Head Road and Sherdley Road roundabouts at peak times, and issues concerning poor pedestrian and cyclist facilities have developed.

To begin solving these problems, the current roundabout by Mere Grange and the Cooperative Food distribution centre will be replaced with a signal controlled crossroads with full pedestrian crossing facilities, creating a more balanced and measured traffic flow, and reducing peak time queues.

Pedestrian and cycle crossing facilities will also be introduced onto all arms of the junction that link to existing pedestrian routes, and speed limits will be modified on the approaches, further improving safety for all road users.

During this period there will be permanent 24 hour traffic management in place to accommodate lane and road closures.

A contraflow will be installed on the south bound carriageway on the A570 Linkway.

Pedestrian access will be maintained via the permanent crossing route; however a diversion of the existing pathway if needed will be installed around the construction works, suitably signed.

The Sutton Hall Junction project has benefitted from funding from the £232 million Liverpool City Region (LCR) Growth Deal, secured from Government in 2014 by the LCR LEP.
