Organised by the Reading Agency, Summer Reading Challenge aims to promote a love for reading by setting out the task of completing six books over the summer holidays.
The theme for the 2018 Summer Reading Challenge – which to date has seen 2,079 youngsters take part – is Mischief Makers, inspired by the much-loved children’s title Beano which celebrates its 80th anniversary this year.
Hailing the impact of the initiative so far in a bid to encourage more children to take part, Councillor Anthony Burns, Cabinet Member for Community Based and Focused Services, said: “The Summer Reading Challenge is one of – if not – the biggest events on the library services’ calendar so I’m delighted to hear that it has attracted such a high interest once again.
“What I would like to see is even more young people sign up to this rewarding and fun initiative before the summer is out because it can significantly enhance a child’s learning development, which is a great advantage going into the new school year.”
To take part in Mischief Makers, all children need to do is sign up at their nearest library where they will be given a colourful collector’s map of Beanotown to keep a record of their Summer Reading Challenge journey.
As children read library books they will receive special stickers, some with mysterious smells. By adding these stickers to their map, young readers will help Dennis, Gnasher and friends solve clues and discover the treasure, having lots of fun and adventures along the way.
There’s a whole programme of events and activities planned across all libraries for families over the summer to celebrate the Summer Reading Challenge. Just contact your local library or go to sthelens.gov.uk/librarycatalogue to find out how to take part.
Those who complete the Summer Reading Challenge, which will run until Saturday 1 September, will be entered in to a fantastic prize draw to win one of the following prizes:
· Knowsley Safari Park – family pass (2 adults, 2 children)
· St Helens Comic Con – family pass (2 adults, 2 children)
· Darkstar Laser – four vouchers
· A signed copy of The Anti-Boredom Book of Brilliant Outdoor Things To Do by Andy Seed.
More prizes may be added along the way.
